The cage or birdcage chandelier is a style common in several countries but most often associated with France. It is so called because it has no central column but a hollow frame which curves out from the base to meet again at the top thus forming a ‘cage’ shape. Candle style lights are usually located on small arms around the outside with crystals hung from the curved frame, the drip bowls, at the base and in the hollow centre of the chandelier.
Birdcage chandeliers come in a variety of materials from wrought iron to glass and of course the classic brass birdcage chandelier.
The frames are often adorned with acanthus leaves, a symbol first used in ancient Greece where it was used to decorate the top and bottom of Corinthian columns. The use of the acanthus leaf saw a major revival during the Renaissance period, although still frequently used today we tend to associate it most often with Louis XVI.

The stags head chandelier is traditionally associated with the Black Forest region of Germany which is why many of them, in addition to the stags heads, also feature garnitures depicting cherries which we more commonly associate with the Black Forest through its association with Black Forest Gateau because of the abundance of wild cherry trees in the region.
They were made throughout the C20th but most date from the middle of the century. Outside Germany they are/were extremely popular in large Victorian houses and further afield in North America and Canada where they are highly sought after for hunting lodges as a more prestigious alternative to the North American antler chandelier which are made from real antler. Indeed the antler chandelier, early examples of which were handmade by hunters, is probably the origin of this style of chandelier.
They are extremely rare because they were used mainly in hallways and lodges and could only be afforded by the wealthiest of Gentlemen. Now due to the very popular trend of taxidermy and the rarity of the Stag Head Chandelier, they have become a most sought after light and make a great focal piece.

This is an early C20th waterfall chandelier with adornment in the form of doves with icicle droplets. The dove is of course the traditional symbol of peace and love and in keeping with this the doves around this chandelier are all in pairs. This is a very rare design, we have never seen another chandelier like this and doubt we will ever see another. It has acquired lots of patina with age and really does look speactacular when lit as there are lights within the frame and in the crystal hangers around the outside.
